Dear Representative Jackie Speier,
My name is William Keenan and I am a High School student from San Mateo, California. Currently, in my theology class, I am making a project that investigates the persistent bias that has infiltrated our media. Throughout my research I have discovered that the news media that is supposed to inform us makes an effort to put spin on all news stories. I am completely disgusted by the rampant media bias that has become normal in most news programs. I am writing this letter to convey my extreme dismay with the current laws regulating the news media. It is my hope that I can convince you to help with new laws that can hold the media accountable for the stories they produce.
In my research, I have come upon various pieces of information that is frightening to me. I read of two news reporters, Jon Du Pre and Larry Johnson, that were fired from the employ of Fox News after their reports did not represent the ideology of the company. I believe that we should be able to work freely without fear of losing our jobs due to our political ideologies. Another story that I read indicated that several correspondents of Fox News were fired after refusing to put spin on a news story. Their firing was deemed legal because there are no laws on the books against lying on a news program. This is an important topic to take a stand on because it involves the job security of American citizens.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter. I know that your schedule is very full, but I would urge you to take action against the bias within our news media. Those that report on the media must be forced to be accountable for their actions so that they cannot spread lies or spin the truth.
Sincerely,
Bill Keenan
